Start with complete, trustworthy ancestry

No tool can evaluate ancestors that were never recorded. Before comparing a pair, verify the identity of both rabbits, connect known parents and preserve breeder or origin information for purchased stock. Unknown ancestry should remain explicitly unknown rather than being guessed.

Consistent naming matters too. Duplicate profiles for the same ancestor can hide a relationship, while two animals with similar names can create a false one. A canonical record for every known rabbit is the foundation of useful pedigree work.

Look beyond the parents

An unrelated sire and dam can still share grandparents or influential ancestors farther back. Review multiple generations whenever the record allows it, noting repeated animals on both sides of the proposed pedigree.

The presence of a shared ancestor is not automatically a breeding verdict. Its significance depends on distance, repetition, goals and the breeder’s wider program. The key is seeing the relationship clearly before making the decision.

Pair pedigree with performance

Avoiding close relationships alone does not create a strong pairing. Consider health, conformation, temperament, growth, fertility and previous litter outcomes alongside ancestry. A genetically distant pair can still be a poor match for the goals of the line.

Connected records help because reproductive history and growth do not need to be reconstructed after the pedigree check. They are available in the same decision context.

Use AI carefully

AI can scan known ancestry, availability and farm records faster than a person moving between several files. It is useful for producing a shortlist and explaining why a candidate appears compatible.

The breeder must still verify the source data and apply domain judgment. Missing ancestors, incorrect identities or unrecorded health information limit every automated suggestion. Treat AI as a structured second set of eyes, not an authority.

Improve the system after every litter

A breeding program learns through outcomes. Keep offspring connected to the pair, record litter and survival results and retain notes that matter to your selection goals. Over time, the record becomes more valuable than a static pedigree certificate because it explains what the relationships produced.
